Business Models/Financial Instruments for Distributed Renewable Energy in India

With more than one-quarter of the population without electricity, India faces key issues around providing universal energy access. Further, even in cases where energy access is present, reliability of supply is a big issue.
SFI would focus on questions around scaling energy access using innovative approaches such as rooftop solar and mini grids, via well-defined public-private partnerships that allow scaling of self-sustaining business models.
Research Focus Areas:
- Economic/financial modeling of value creation through public-private partnerships and identifying how value could be shared to create win-win situations.
- Design of financial instruments to address barriers to availability of capital as well as cost of capital.
